Historic Port of Charlestown

Historic Port of Charlestown

A small harbour with a huge history. The Historic Port of Charelstown is a beautiful and timeless harbour nestled in Saint Austell Bay. It became famous for exporting fine clay to manufacturers around the world. In more recent years the harbour has become known for its fleet of Tall Ships whose masts pierce the horizon.

As you enter the village you are transported back in time. The sight of the small fleet of square riggers at anchor in the Grade II listed harbour adds to the atmosphere of times gone by. It is quite clear why this unique little port has played a part in many TV series and movies, including ‘Hornblower’, ‘Mansfield Park’ and ‘The Onedin Line’, amongst others.

It is a popular location for movies and TV companies and hundreds of features have been shot in the histric port. Poldark and Taboo to name just two! Come and visit the harbour and learn about its rich history, climb the Top Mast and explore the hold of our Tall Ship.

The charm and appeal of the village and it’s grade two listed harbour still attract thousands of people every year to visit this historical part of Cornwall. Previously unknown to the English potters at the beginning of the 18th century, china clay and china stone were found in Cornwall. Once the clay was ready for marketing, it than had to be shipped out of the county.
